The Pediatric Developmental Program is part of the Dell Children’s Neuroscience Center and is located at our Capital Plaza office. This program provides diagnostic evaluations for autism, developmental delay, ADHD and follow-up for infants and children up to age 12 who are at risk for developmental delay due to premature birth or other perinatal events. Standardized diagnostic tests are used to assess developmental milestones and children are managed using a medical model to meet their developmental needs. Diagnostic reports with treatment recommendations are sent to the primary care provider and appropriate agencies for treatment.
We offer a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and monitoring of children with neurobehavioral conditions such as ADHD, autism, speech/language disorders, dyspraxia and developmental delay. We also provide developmental follow-up for NICU graduates and children with Down Syndrome.
Our program collaborates with speech therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapists from Dell Children’s Rehabilitative Services, in addition to psychological services through the Texas Child Study Center.
At this time, we provide developmental testing for children from birth to 12 years. Standardized tools are used to monitor developmental progress and aid medical decisions on plan of care including therapeutic programming. Our team also provides parent education, coordination of care between specialists and treatment recommendations.
New patient evaluations involve 2-3 visits. The first visit will be an initial consult by the development-behavioral pediatrician who will review the child’s development and medical history as well as perform a comprehensive physical exam and developmental screening. Some children will be scheduled for further comprehensive developmental testing and/or evaluation by the multidisciplinary team. Depending on the complexity of the child, a third visit is scheduled for discussion of testing results and treatment recommendations.
Due to the length of the evaluations, please bring your child’s favorite toys, snacks, or any items that may help him/her be more comfortable for the visit. A referral is required even if your insurance does not require. In addition, the new patient paperwork is required prior to an appointment being scheduled. Please fax referrals and medical records including ECI, education and therapy evaluations to 512 380 4274.

Evaluations usually involve 2-3 visits. We discourage same day sibling appointments. Due to the length of the evaluations, most children do not have the attention span or frustration tolerance to endure back to back visits. The first visit will be an initial consult by the developmental-behavioral pediatrician who will review the child’s developmental and medical history and perform a comprehensive physical exam and developmental screening.
Some children will be referred for further comprehensive developmental testing or evaluations by a speech, occupational and/or physical therapist. Evaluations by the therapists may occur at the Children’s Therapy Gym at Dell Children’s Medical Center. Results of testing as well as treatment recommendations are shared with parents on a follow up visit with the developmental pediatrician. The child does not have to come to the feedback session.
Please plan up to 2 hours for your visit. Some patients will receive a diagnosis on their first visit and others might be scheduled for further diagnostic testing before a diagnosis can be made. We ask that you do not bring siblings to the appointment, if possible, so that you and your child can get the most out of the appointment and our full attention. In addition, we do not have staff members available to observe your child if you wish to speak to the doctor privately, so we ask that another adult accompany you to the appointment if there is something you wish to discuss privately.
What You Need To Bring
Please complete the Behavioral Intake Form (based on child’s age). The appointments can take 1-2 hours so bring your child’s favorite toys, snacks or any items that may help him/her be more comfortable for the visit. The intake form, outside therapy, educational or medical records must be faxed to 512-380-4274 BEFORE an appointment will be scheduled. It is extremely important that you either bring or fax ahead of time ALL therapy and academic reports and evaluations. These include ECI reports, school testing (FIE and IEP), assessments from OT, ST, PT, any neurological reports from providers (not including Dell Children’s) and any psychological or neuropsychological testing completed.
We encourage you to contact your insurance company to verify your benefits and confirm that your primary care physician is willing to partner with our office by providing a referral and authorization. Please note: therapy evaluations at Dell Children’s Medical Center may be subject to your deductible. If you have any questions or concerns regarding evaluations at the Children’s Therapy Gym please contact the Specialty Care Center at 512-324-0137.
