Mariel Cannady, PhD

Dr. Mariel Smith Cannady is a licensed psychologist and licensed specialist in school psychology. She provides psychological services in the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics department of Dell Children’s Medical Group. Dr. Cannady specializes in treating toddlers, children, and early adolescents with a range of neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and emotional concerns. She also enjoys helping parents support their child’s developmental progress through parent training, education, and advocacy. Dr. Cannady is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and has expertise in supporting twice-exceptional students and facilitating parent-school collaborations for children with special education needs.

Dr. Cannady is an assistant professor in the Dell Medical School Department of Psychiatry. She earned her doctorate in clinical and school psychology from James Madison University. She completed her internship in child clinical/pediatric psychology at the Texas Child Study Center/Dell Children’s Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Cannady completed interdisciplinary training in neurodevelopmental disorders through the LEND program at Virginia Commonwealth University where she served as an autism fellow.

Dr. Cannady has specialized intervention training in cognitive-behavioral interventions, behavioral parent training, and applied behavior analysis. She is a graduate of the International OCD Foundation’s Pediatric OCD Intensive Behavior Therapy Training Institute. Her research interests include enhancing family engagement in pediatric treatment and parent-child interactions among children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. In her free time, she enjoys reading, spending time with family and friends, and playing word games such as Taboo and Scrabble.
