The Texas Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Childhood Obesity offers an individually-based program for young children and their parents called Healthy PIECES, which stands for Parenting Intervention for Early Childhood: Education and Skill-Building. Children between the ages of two and seven and are classified as overweight or obese [body mass index (BMI)> 85th percentile] can participate.
The Healthy PIECES program is individually-tailored for young children and their parents. Parents are an important part of the program and take an active role in changing their child’s behavior. The focus of the program is on promoting healthy eating and exercise habits. Additionally, we offer assistance to parents with setting limits on behavior, improving routines, and managing negative behaviors like tantrums and refusing to eat, if necessary.
Parents work with a team that includes a behavioral health provider (“behavior coach”) and health providers (dietitian and/or physical activity expert) to learn and apply skills that can lead to better behaviors in their child and a healthier lifestyle for the family. Parents will have the opportunity to practice new parenting skills during the session, allowing them to feel confident when using these skills at home. Treatment length can vary (typically six to 12 one-hour sessions), depending on the parents’ concerns.
If you are an ACES participant, you can be referred by your ACES physician. Please note that we have a limited number of spots available in the program. If all available spots are taken, you will be placed on a waiting list. Once we have received the form, we will contact you to confirm participation.
