Teens Empowered for Exercise and Nutrition (TEEN) Group

Are you working on getting to a healthier weight?

The Texas Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Childhood Obesity, in collaboration with the Texas Child Study Center, has a group program for teens and their families.

How can I join TEEN group?

Requirements for group:

  • Be a teen, (age 13 to 18) with a parent or guardian who can attend meetings with you
  • All referrals for the group must come from either your ACES physician, if you are a patient of the ACES program, or your primary care provider (PCP)
  • Classified as needing to get to a healthier weight by your doctor or health care provider
  • Have the desire to learn more about how to make positive changes

What can I learn in this group?

The TEEN group focuses on two areas:

Cooking and Nutrition: Learn to follow a recipe, plan a healthy menu, read labels and go shopping for healthy meals. Families get hands-on practice by cooking their own dinner at each meeting.

Social-Emotional Skill Building: Learn to improve health behaviors by managing emotions, improving relationships, improving self-image and engaging all family members in a healthier lifestyle.

Physical Activity: Learn to engage in physical activity as a family in an environment that is fun. Families also expand their understanding of the elements of fitness and how to use available resources.

The TEEN group is open to all interested and eligible teens in the Austin area, with a referral from your physician.
