That’s why it’s important to take safety seriously when your kids are participating in a sporting practice or event.

1. Always Have Adult Supervision

Testing the boundaries of your world is a natural part of being a kid. Unfortunately, sometimes this can lead to scrapes and bruises, or even children’s orthopedic injuries. Adults should be on hand to ensure players are abiding by rules, or to offer assistance if an injury does occur.

When choosing a sports league or organization for your child to be a part of, make sure they’ve made a commitment to safety and the prevention of injuries that you’re comfortable with.

2. Teach the Importance of Warming Up

All athletes should make a habit of stretching before starting any physical activity. There are two main types of stretches, static and dynamic.

  • Static stretching is holding a position for a length of time, such as touching your toes.
  • Dynamic stretching refers to shaking and moving muscles to loosen them up, as with jogging in place.

Depending on the type of sport and level they play at, your child should generally warm up for 5 to 10 minutes before any sporting activity.

3. Use the Proper Safety Equipment

It’s important for children to use proper, well-fitting safety gear. Talk with your child’s coaches before the season starts to ensure you have all the necessary equipment before practices begin.

4. Be Aware of the Playing Surface

For field sports like football or soccer, always inspect a playing surface for irregularities that could cause children’s orthopedic injuries. Make sure all play areas are clear and free from debris.
