Dell Children’s Neonatal Simulation Program

At Dell Children’s, our highly-specialized NICU clinicians offer a personalized, neonatal simulation program for our community partners in Central Texas.

Many newborns require expected or unexpected specialized care or resuscitation in the delivery room due to their small size, prematurity, birth defects, or distress around the time of delivery. Healthcare simulation using a realistic and interactive newborn manikin can help medical teams develop expertise in the care for such patients before those patients are even born. Our Neonatal Simulation Program provides education and training in the specialized field of newborn resuscitation. Through simulation, this interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other specialized providers are able to assess and address knowledge and system gaps and achieve improved care delivery, enhanced teamwork and collaboration, and ultimately improved patient outcomes. Our program offers educational opportunities within the Ascension Seton network as well as to the surrounding community hospitals and educational facilities.

For providers or administrators

Services Provided

As part of the Dell Children’s Outreach Program, our team of expert neonatal simulation-trained facilitators will come to your home site and lead custom built neonatal simulation scenarios to enable learners to practice low volume, high risk skills in a safe space, using high-fidelity newborn simulators to improve team performance and skills. Our facilitators use video recording to provide real-time participant feedback in a confidential format during debriefing to improve teamwork and communication. Through the use of custom built data collection tools, our team is able to assess team performance and provide measured feedback. We can accurately assess teams’ average time to interventions, such as initiation of PPV, intubation, or line placement, as well as compliance with the Neonatal Resuscitation Program recommendations, such as proper evaluation and troubleshooting for PPV effectiveness or correct chest compression technique. In addition, we will collect participant feedback to ensure that this simulation program meets the needs and objectives of our learners.

Who should consider neonatal simulation?

All health care providers who are working in areas of newborn care including labor and delivery, mother/baby, newborn intensive care, emergency departments and more can benefit from newborn simulation training. All skill levels are welcome! We provide multidisciplinary, in-situ simulations that are fun, engaging, and designed to improve patient care outcomes.

Sample Scenarios

  • Hypovolemic shock
  • Septic shock
  • Birth depression
  • Choking/aspiration in a newborn
  • Initial stabilization of extremely premature or ELBW infant

We can also build any custom scenario to meet your educational needs!

I felt safe to be uncomfortable and use the situation as a learning experience and not as a judgment on my practice – MD

Utilizing the camera to review the simulation was so effective for evaluation, and the compassionate debrief that highlighted everyone’s responsibility as a team – RN

This simulation experience needs to be held more often -MD

A great learning experience! The first that felt so realistic – RN
