Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

epilepsy_monitoring_unit (1)We have the only dedicated pediatric epilepsy monitoring unit in Central Texas. Our advanced EMU is staffed with specially-trained medical, nursing and technical personnel who monitor patients around-the-clock.

Our team of experts evaluates and characterizes spells and treats all childhood seizure types including focal (partial) with or without alteration of consciousness and generalized such as absence, generalized tonic clonic, tonic, clonic, atonic, and myoclonic. Regardless of the case, our multidisciplinary team is dedicated to crafting the most appropriate, effective treatment plan available for your child.

Located on the fourth floor, our eight-bed EMU has a state-of-the-art video monitoring with wireless EEG technology that allows for your child to move freely about the room. With a television, DVD player, Wii system and Wi-Fi, there are plenty of items to keep your child engaged.

Our EMU playroom is child friendly and designed by our Child Life experts with your child in mind. The epilepsy playroom is a relaxing, but, at the same time, stimulating area with wireless and video monitoring, soft edged furniture, rubber flooring, and interactive lighting.

EMU Support Group

Our EMU Epilepsy Nurse Practitioners and social worker provide general education and emotional support to EMU families once a week. Meetings are held on Wednesday mornings from 9:30am-10:30am for the families who are admitted to the EMU each week. Come join us and interact with other families as we explore general pediatric epilepsy topics and common questions!

It is important that our patients are monitored by an adult while they are in their room. If you are the only family member present, please let us know and we will try to work with you so that you can attend.
