Dell Children’s Medical Center is the only American College of Surgeons Level 1 pediatric trauma center in Central Texas and one of five in Texas. Our trauma center offers the highest level of care available to children who have been victims of trauma.
Level I Trauma Center
Our Pediatric Level I Trauma Center is a vital community asset. When a family member or loved one is injured, having the highest-level of care available can mean the difference between life and death. The American Trauma Society categorizes trauma centers according to a number of factors, including how many patients are admitted each year and the types of services provided. Available resources are then verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The verification process is voluntary, and takes three years to complete.
Specially Trained and Multi-Disciplinary Team
The foundation of our Level I designation is the multidisciplinary team of specially-trained healthcare experts that includes pediatric specialists in emergency medicine, trauma surgery, orthopedics, neurology, plastic surgery and anesthesiology, as well as nurses, social workers, child life specialists and rehabilitation therapists.
Time is critical in traumatic injuries. We’re ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week to care for the most severely injured children. Once the ED is alerted of impending arrival, the trauma team is mobilized through an efficient paging system to immediately make ready and receive the patient.
All services to treat the most critically injured children are in place and available including, but not limited to:
- Advanced airway management
- Advanced cardiopulmonary management
- Surgical management of chest, abdominal, and genitourinary injuries.
- Neurosurgical management
- Concussion management
- Orthopedic management
- Burn management
- Radiological management (conventional, CT, interventional radiology & MRI)
From admission to rehabilitation, the transition along the patient’s journey to recovery is seamless. The trauma team provides expertly coordinated care that focuses not just on the treatment of the injury but also on the emotional and financial needs of the patient and family. The trauma clinic rounds out the continuum of care, providing discharged patients a centralized outpatient program for follow-up care.
The Injury Prevention Program emphasizes preventing injury to children in Central Texas through education, research, and advocacy. Services include:
- One-on-one injury prevention consultations for trauma patient families
- A clinic dedicated to special needs patients requiring custom transportation solutions
- Child passenger safety technician trainings
- Child safety education for pediatric residents
- Monthly car seat inspection station
