Reportable Communicable Disease Surveillance

2012-2013-chart-04

Reportable communicable diseases are those identified by the state health department for school and child care settings. Influenza and sexually transmitted infections are not included. Decrease in varicella (chickenpox) infections was a key driver in the overall decrease of reportable communicable diseases over time. AISD and SHS work closely with the Austin Travis County Health and Human Services Department on all outbreaks and cases of reportable communicable diseases to decrease spread and lessen the impact on AISD students and staff. The district-wide coverage that SHS provides allows for better coordinated surveillance and action when communicable disease arise within the district.

2012-2013-chart-05

Varicella (chickenpox) cases decreased from 400 in SY 2003-04 to 27 in SY 2012-13. This likely reflects changes in immunizations practice.
