My Passion for Healthcare

My mother, a registered nurse, inspired my love of medicine. She worked nights and I would greet her when she got off shift and we would discuss the cases she had seen that night. We looked up diseases in the Encyclopedia Britannica. When I was 14, I told her I wanted to be a doctor. She responded by saying, "Your dad and I will do everything we can to support you." I have never regretted my choice of career. I cannot imagine doing anything else.

My Clinical Focus

Prior to moving to Austin, I was an Associate Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the UT Medical school specializing in pediatric HIV infection. Through my work with families with this disease, I came to understand that successful treatment of a chronic disease is perhaps more dependent on social factors influencing families than medical care. I am a teacher and I relish the challenge of sharing my insights with medical residents and students in addition to sharing my love of medicine and pediatrics in particular.
