COVID-19 is infecting Hispanic children in Central Texas at a disproportionate rate, and doctor’s at Dell Children’s estimate that 10% of children admitted for COVID-19 have required ICU care and the majority of those patients are Hispanic. Dr. Sarmistha Hauger, infectious disease specialist at Dell Children’s, and Dr. Kimberly Avila Edwards, Medical Director of the Children’s Health Express, share why prevention messages continue to be critically important in this KXAN feature.

Dr. Hauger said outreach is critical especially as many students go from virtual learning to in-person. She explained that Children’s Health Express which is Dell Children’s mobile clinic has been instrumental in spreading the message of prevention in communities that are seeing higher cases.

The mobile clinic travels to communities with little access to healthcare. The team not only provides care, but has also been raising awareness about the virus.
