Going Green Expands at Dell Children’s

Austin, Texas – (April 10, 2008) – In celebration of “Earth Month,” a natural herb garden has been planted in the coastal plains courtyard adjacent to the ‘Thyme Out’ Café at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas.

“With Dell Children’s seeking Platinum Status designation under the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) program sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, it’s only fitting that we create such a garden,” said Judi Bork, Sodexo Area General Manager for the Seton Family of Hospitals. “The natural beauty and tranquility of an herb garden is enhanced by the natural lighting, waterscape features, soft colors and outdoor space that the café was designed around”

The Dell Children’s herb garden is 50 feet long and consists of six individual beds. More than 130 plants were installed by local garden specialist Becky Barsch Fisher, aka “the Garden Hoe.” The herbs, including basil, oregano, cilantro, parsley, French and lemon thyme, peppermint, chocolate mint and Texas tarragon will be used by the Dell Children’s culinary team to help educate and promote healthy cooking.

Bork added, “In partnership with Dell Children’s on-site management team, Seton food services’ contract management company, Sodexo, will ensure that all state and healthcare regulations are met to ensure correct agricultural practices are in place before the herbs are harvested.”
