CHIP and STAR Medicaid Benefits

As a member of Dell Children’s Health Plan, you get all of the coverage and benefits that come with the CHIP or STAR Medicaid programs. If you have questions about your benefits, we’d love to help. Please call us at 1-888-596-0268 (TTY 711) or fill out a contact form.

CHIP and STAR Medicaid covers:

  • Regular medical check-ups and office visits
  • Prescription drugs
  • Vaccines
  • Hospital services (if you need to stay at a hospital or just come for a few hours)
  • Emergency room and ambulance services
  • Eye exams and glasses for children and adults
  • Dental exams (only for under 21)
  • Texas Health Steps visits (STAR Medicaid members only)
  • Annual Well Checks (CHIP members only)
  • Mental health services for the treatment of alcohol and drug addiction
  • Medical supplies
  • X-rays
  • Laboratory tests
  • Medical advice from a pediatric specialist in our network
  • Being able to meet with a mental health doctor
  • Treatment for special health-care needs:
    • Physical therapy
    • Home healthcare
    • Foot care
    • Speech therapy
    • Occupational therapy (for members who need extra help learning things like how to hold a pen or button their clothes)
    • Transplants
  • Treatment of pre-existing conditions (pre-existing is any medical need you had before getting on the health plan)
  • Rides to medical appointments
  • Interpretation and translation services
  • Care for women’s health:
    • Pregnancy care and prenatal care
    • Nurse/midwife care
  • Plus many extra benefits!

  • Up to 20 prenatal visits
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Labor and delivery costs
  • Two doctor visits for mother after birth
  • Regular medical check-ups, immunizations and prescriptions for your baby

Pharmacy

If you need help finding a pharmacy, visit our Find a Doctor page.

If you have problems getting prescriptions filled or need more help finding a pharmacy, call Member Services at 1-888-596-0268 (TTY 711).

If you are taking a prescription for longer than 30 days, consider using the mail order pharmacy. It’s easy and saves money. Visit Navitus Health Solutions for more information.

The CHIP Pharmacy Program does not cover:

  • Over-the-counter drugs
  • Birth control medications needed only for birth control purposes
  • Nutritional products
  • Medical supplies or equipment, except for insulin syringes
  • Drugs that must be given in a doctor’s office or health-care facility

Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse

Members can get behavioral health help by calling 1-888-596-0268 (TTY 711). A list of mental health providers is available in the Find a Doctor section.

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is health-care coverage for people who do not qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private health insurance.

CHIP covers children from birth to age 18 for these services:

  • Medical
  • Prescriptions
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Behavioral health

CHIP Perinatal covers pregnant women and new moms.

Enrollment Fee

  • The fee is based on the family’s income. Some families will have to pay $35 or $50 a year to enroll, but lower-income families will pay nothing.

Co-pays

  • Co-pays are based on the family’s income.
  • Lower-income families will have co-pays that range from $0 to $5.
  • Higher-income families will have co-pays that range from $10 to $35.

There are no enrollment fees or copayments for CHIP Perinate members.

STAR Medicaid provides health-care coverage for children from birth to age 20. It is also called Children’s Medicaid. It covers children, pregnant women, and some former foster care youth.

Each plan has:

  • A primary care doctor who you choose
  • A large group of specialists
  • Therapists
  • Clinics
  • Hospitals

Some services included are:

  • Medical
  • Prescriptions
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Behavioral health
  • Perinatal services

There are no enrollment fees and co-payments.

You may be able to get perinatal coverage from CHIP if all of the following apply to you:

  • You are pregnant.
  • You are a Texas resident.
  • You don’t have insurance.
  • You cannot get Medicaid.

CHIP Perinate coverage is for your unborn baby. It covers:

  • Up to 20 prenatal visits
  • Prescriptions
  • Labor and delivery costs
  • Two doctor visits for mom after birth

Regular medical check-ups, immunizations and prescriptions for your baby. Your child may be able to continue health coverage under the CHIP program.

A pregnant woman with little or no income can receive Medicaid benefits during pregnancy and up to two months after birth if she meets certain income requirements.
