How to Prepare for Your Visit

How to Prepare for Your Visit

Our staff at the Developmental Behavioral Pediatric Clinic (DBP) want you and your child to feel comfortable and prepared on the day of your visit! Below are some helpful tips to ensure you and your child are ready for the appointment and know what to bring:

    • Allow approximately 1.5- 2 hours for your first visit
    • Plan for traffic and know how to get here!
      • There is a fifteen minute grace period for your appointment, after which you must be rescheduled.
      • We are located in Dell Children’s Comprehensive Care clinic near Capital Plaza, directly adjacent to northbound i-35, between Autozone and Walgreens. We have designated visitor parking at the front of the building (the side of the building closest to the access road).
      • If taking the Capital Metro, the closest stop is at 5324 Cameron/Broadmoor which is .2 miles away from the clinic.
    • Confirm with the scheduler that it is okay to bring another adult with you to the appointment if you feel this will be helpful to have a “second set of ears.”
    • If possible, please leave siblings or other children at home as they can often create a distraction.
    • Talk to your child about coming to the clinic to help prepare them. Explain that this visit is different from other doctor visits and that the doctors will mostly be playing and talking to the child.
    • Utilize a visual schedule or a social story like the one listed here.
    • What to bring:
      • Send required records prior to the initial visit if possible
        • Please fax or email any recent evaluations to 512.380.4274 or developmentalpeds@ascension.org.
        • These include:
          • A Full and Individual Evaluation (FIE) by the school district
          • If your child has seen any other professionals including psychologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, speech/language pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and/or any other medical subspecialty evaluations performed outside of Dell Children’s Medical Group, please have these evaluations sent ahead of time or bring to your appointment.
      • Bring notes of what medications your child is on (if any)
      • Write down your questions ahead of time to bring to the visit
      • Consider bringing any videos of your child that might be helpful
      • Bring distraction items: Feel free to let your child bring a comfort item with them if this would be helpful. Snacks may also be helpful for longer visits.
