Regional Heart Program
Cardiac Surgery

The Regional Heart Program at Dell Children's has a long history of providing excellent pediatric cardiac care in central Texas. We performed our first open-heart surgery in 1988 when our program was located at Brackenridge Hospital. In 2007, we moved into the Dell Children's Medical Center with state-of-the-art cardiac operating rooms and catheterization labs to service the 46-county area. In 2010, we formed a partnership with UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children's Medical Center Dallas to further expand cardiac surgery services at Dell Children's.

The cardiothoracic surgeons at Dell Children's Regional Heart Program use state-of-the-art technology to treat and repair the entire spectrum of congenital and acquired defects in infants, children and adolescents. In consultation with other physicians and the patient's family, the surgeons create a surgical plan according to each patient's unique heart defect and history.

All surgical procedures are performed under the care of specially trained pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists. Procedures that require cardiopulmonary bypass are performed with pediatric perfusionists. Perfusionists operate the heart-lung machine which provides oxygenation and circulation to the body during open-heart surgery. Pediatric cardiologists perform transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) during surgery to assess heart function.
