Plastic Surgery

Patrick Kelley, MD

Steven L. Henry, MD

Bio

Dr. Henry completed his residency in plastic surgery at the University of Missouri, followed by two fellowships: one in hand surgery at the Hand Center of San Antonio, and the other in reconstructive microsurgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. He has expertise in all aspects of pediatric hand surgery, including conditions both acute, such as fractures and tendon injuries, and congenital/developmental, such as hand malformations and brachial plexus conditions.

Dr. Henry is also a highly trained microneurovascular surgeon, with substantial experience in post-oncologic reconstruction of the head/neck and breast, reconstruction of the lower extremity, and reattachment of limbs and digits. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Henry is also very active academically, having contributed 30 scientific articles and book chapters to the surgical literature. He has presented his research at many regional, national, and international meetings, and continues to collaborate on numerous research projects with colleagues from around the world.

Patrick Kelley, MD

Sanjay K. Sharma, MD, FACS

Bio

Dr. Sharma is a plastic surgeon specializing in hand and microsurgery and certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery/Hand. He completed his undergraduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis where he majored in chemistry and biochemistry. He graduated magna cum laude in 1992 and entered medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston that same year. He has had the luxury and benefit of training at preeminent institutions with some of this country's most renowned surgeons.

The Texas Medical Center served as the backdrop for Dr. Sharma's combined general surgery and plastic surgery training at Baylor College of Medicine. The broad scope of training included extensive experience in aesthetic surgery, breast reconstruction and augmentation, congenital and pediatric plastic surgery, trauma reconstruction, and hand and microsurgery. An additional one year orthopedic hand surgery fellowship at the University of Washington Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine further developed his skills as a hand surgeon.

Hilton P. Gottschalk, MD

Hilton P. Gottschalk, MD

Bio

Dr. Gottschalk completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern at Dallas. After completing his first fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery in San Diego, he continued his training with an additional fellowship in adult and pediatric hand surgery in Chicago. He treats hand and upper extremity injuries (both acute and chronic), including sports related injuries to the upper extremity. In addition, he specializes in cerebral palsy, arthrogryposis, and other congenital hand and upper extremity conditions.

Dr. Gottschalk remains active academically by presenting research and giving talks both nationally and internationally. He has written multiple articles and book chapters ranging from hand and upper extremity trauma to rare congenital conditions as well as sports related wrist injuries.

Dr. Gottschalk belongs to the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Association for Surgery of the Hand, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the Pediatric Hand Study Group.

Occupational Therapy

Karen Ayala, MS, OTR/L, CHT

Bio

Karen Ayala, MS, OTR/L, CHT completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Radford University in 1993, and her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy at Boston University in 1996. In 2001, Karen completed the requirements to become a Certified hand Therapist (CHT), a credential held by only 5,382 therapists in the country. She has worked in a variety of settings including both large hospitals and small outpatient clinics. Karen has worked with patients of all ages with hand diagnoses ranging from trauma to repetitive use to congenital hand conditions.

In 2013, Karen joined the hand team at Dell Children’s Medical Center so that she could focus on her true passion, pediatric hand therapy. She is skilled in the evaluation of the upper extremity, splinting and casting, activity modification, therapeutic exercise, and administration of the Handwriting Without Tears program. In her spare time, Karen enjoys spending time with her husband and three children and long distance running.

Ginny Graham, OTR/L, CHT

Bio

Ginny Graham OTR/CHT, attended the University of Texas and received her Bachelor of Sciences degree in Occupational Therapy from the UT Health Science Center- San Antonio in 1988. She returned to Austin after completing her clinical rotations at UTMB at Galveston, Dallas Rehabilitation institute in Dallas, and a specialty rotation in the area of pediatrics at The Wiasman Center at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Ginny has spent the majority of her career focused on the specialty area of Upper Extremity and Hand Rehabilitation working with both children and adults. She has extensive experience in both the hospital and out- patient clinical settings treating a wide range of upper extremity and hand diagnosis. She has held an advanced specialty certification as a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) since 1996 and participates in several Hand specialty interest groups.

In her spare time she and her husband are involved in supporting their children's community schools and youth athletic teams with special focus on swimming, diving, softball, and basketball.
