University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center – Austin Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship

Fellowship Dates: August 1, 2012 - July 31, 2013

Overview

Fully comprehensive in nature, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center – Austin Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship offers unique didactic opportunities in both adult and pediatric craniofacial surgery, while also providing exposure to pediatric plastic surgery, training in microsurgical techniques for craniofacial procedures and exposure to both congenital and acquired conditions in children and adults. Integrated with the multidisciplinary Dell Children's Craniofacial Team, the goal of this fellowship is to develop knowledge and technical ability in treating craniofacial conditions. We are seeking applicants interested in pursuing academic medicine who have strong academic and research backgrounds and performed well in their residency.

The fellowship is based primarily at Dell Children's Medical Center, one of only 17 Level I Pediatric Trauma Centers in the US. Fellows will spend the other 25% of their time at University Medical Center Brackenridge, a Level I Trauma Center servicing Central Texas.

Fellowship training includes:

Pediatric

  • Cleft lip/palate care
  • Alveolar bone grafting
  • Orthognathic surgery
  • Craniofacial distraction osteogenesis
  • Craniosynostosis
  • Craniofacial syndromes
  • Le Fort procedures
  • Monobloc advancement
  • Skull base tumors, vascular anomalies
  • Tissue expansion and general reconstruction
  • Autologous and Medpor ear reconstruction
Adult
  • Facial trauma
  • Secondary traumatic deformities
  • Head/neck cancer reconstruction
  • Craniofacial reconstruction and microsurgery
  • Orthognathic surgery

Research:
The program offers both clinical and basic science research opportunities through the fellowship hospitals and the University of Texas School of Biomedical Engineering. With several clinical IRB and basic science studies underway, fellows are expected to participate in research, produce a minimum of one publication and present research at regional and/or national meetings.

Prerequisite Training: Completion of ACGME accredited plastic surgery residency.
