The Dell Children’s Craniofacial and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Center is attracting specialists from diverse disciplines for the treatment of children with congenital malformations or traumatic injuries of the head and face. The center has just expanded capabilities in the areas of pediatric craniofacial orthodontics and pediatric hand surgery.
Comprehensive and centralized craniofacial care close to home
Children born with deformities of the face or skull or who have tumors or injuries in these areas, have very complex needs. The Craniofacial Center at Dell Children’s brings together healthcare specialists from many different fields into one hospital setting where they can work together to benefit their young patients. Well-coordinated care offered in one place makes treatment easier and better for patients, their families and healthcare providers alike. Patients become familiar with the treatment setting, and they can stay close to home to receive quality, comprehensive care.
Multi-disciplinary approach to patient care
Assembling a team of healthcare providers from various disciplines and specialties in the treatment of individual patients, the Craniofacial Center not only offers quality, medical treatment in a positive healing environment for its patients, it also provides a practice environment in which healthcare providers can collaborate in new and exciting ways. The team meets regularly to diagnose, discuss and develop treatment plans for individual patients. This routine, face-to-face exchange of information starts with an extensive initial consultation and continues throughout diagnosis and treatment. In addition, cases are discussed periodically in an open forum so that a patient’s team can benefit from the insights and expertise of other healthcare providers who are not actively involved in the case.
Continuum of care
At the Craniofacial Center, every patient benefits from the efforts of the full-time clinic coordinator, who works to ensure a smooth path from diagnosis through treatment. Treatment, which may start with counseling even before a patient is born, may continue through childhood and into adulthood. Patients do not outgrow our commitment to them. As we follow patients over the years, we collect imaging data to study their long-term growth. By analyzing this data, our research staff can improve existing treatments and develop new ones, keeping the Center on the forefront of craniofacial care.
