The CBCC Welcomes New Social Worker
The CBCC family is expanding. In January Carmen Gattis, LMSW joined the staff. The Kansas native, who did her undergraduate studies at Tabor College and graduate studies at the University of Kansas, began her social work career in May 2009. She has worked with pediatric and or young adult populations in medical, academic and workforce settings.
Carmen will see patients and families both at the CBCC and 4North floor at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas.
We asked Carmen about herself and her new role at the CBCC.
Why did you decide in a social work career in pediatrics?
I saw social work as an opportunity to be part of a unique profession that has meaning and action. It was a way to support, challenge, and champion for others, to live the best life possible.
I specifically chose pediatrics because I am committed to enhancing the emotional and physical well-being of children, to provide them with a voice, an understanding, and an opportunity.
What do you hope to accomplish in your role here at the CBCC?
I feel very fortunate to be a part of the Children’s Blood & Cancer Center and have the opportunity to work with such an extraordinary population and staff. My goal is to help families continue to effectively function in their environment, to help ease the way and get connected, while going through treatment.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I enjoy having the chance to meet so many different people, and the opportunity to learn about them AND from them.
What is something that your patients/families would find surprising about you?
I played college volleyball and basketball, which others sometimes find surprising when I tell them…maybe because I’m short?!?
When Carmen is not at work she enjoys baking and trying new recipes, running, Crossfit, watching and playing sports, movies and trying new restaurants.
