The Cancer and Blood Disorders Program’s medical staff consists of five physicians, Dr. James Sharp, Dr. Sharon Lockhart, Dr. Donald Wells, Dr. Linda Shaffer, and Dr. Philip Neff. Dr. Sharp is the center's medical director and has been in practice since 1967, and in Austin since 1981. Dr. Lockhart joined Dr. Sharp in practice in 1992, from U.T. M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where she had been affiliated since 1988. Dr. Lockhart is the center’s clinical research director. In 1995, Dr. Wells joined the center’s medical staff, after completing a fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Shaffer joined the medical staff in 2002 after serving as a faculty member at the U. T. Health Science Center and the Associate Director of the South Texas Comprehensive Hemophilia Center in San Antonio. In 2006, Dr. Neff joined the physician's team from his most recent position as Assistant Professor of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at East Carolina University, Pitt County Memorial Hospital. All five doctors are board certified in pediatric hematology/oncology, and are members of a physician group called ‘Specially For Children. Each brings dedication, expertise and caring to the program.

In addition to the specialties of pediatric hematology/oncology, the Blood and Cancer Program consults physicians from a variety of fields. These include pediatric surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists and other sub-specialties in pediatric medicine such as infectious disease, neurology, intensive care and cardiology—all available at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas.
