LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center

The news about childhood cancer is getting better and better.  Important changes in the treatment of childhood cancer have resulted in very significant increases in survival rates.  Almost three-quarters of the 12,000 children and adolescents diagnosed each year with childhood cancer can expect to be cured.  To date, more than 250, 000 people in the U.S. have successfully been treated for childhood cancer.  The numbers are continuing to grow as new techniques and therapies for cancer treatment become available.  Here at the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center, Austin, Texas, we understand that individuals who have completed treatment, and whose disease is not likely to recur, require specialized care in a clinic that focuses on the needs of survivors.  We have learned that many pediatric cancer survivors are at risk for physical and psychological issues related to cancer and its therapy.  The radiation, chemotherapy and surgery used to successfully treat childhood cancers may lead to what are called, “late effects.” These late effects may include:

  • Impaired growth
  • Heart problems
  • Lung problems
  • Thyroid problems
  • Bone problems
  • Dental problems
  • Fertility problems
  • Liver problems
  • Kidney problems
  • Learning problems
  • Emotional problems

Many survivors have no late effects and are doing very well.  Although late effects may not be apparent now, it is important for all cancer survivors to have enough information about the treatment they received and to understand how that treatment might have the potential for long-term complications.  In addition, survivors should know what steps they need to take to remain as healthy as possible.

In partnership, the Cancer and Blood Disorders Program and the Lance Armstrong Foundation have opened a center, with two interacting locations, to care for and track long-term survivors of childhood cancer.  There will be a clinic space where the patients will have their comprehensive visit and the corresponding meeting place in the Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas where support groups, celebrations and meetings will be held.  The LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center was established to improve the health and well-being of childhood cancer survivors by promoting adherence to a schedule of follow-up appointments; providing referrals to specialists; offering psychosocial support groups; transitioning patients to adult care when they are ready; and educating patients, parents and healthcare professionals about the long-term effects of cancer treatment.
