infant_pacemaker_smPacemakers, Not Just for Adults (February 2013)

Pacemakers aren’t just for adults. Because of medical innovation the device has evolved to a size of a silver dollar so that even the tiniest patients can use the life-saving technology. One such patient is 4-year old Sophia Fernandez. Sophia’s heart was beating at half the rate of most babies at her age. Her condition may have been dangerous if not for early intervention.

Mom credits her pediatrician, Dr. Ting Chang of Treehouse Pediatrics, for identifying the slow heartbeat during her daughter’s regular checkup and the Dell Children’s Regional Heart Team (especially Drs. Holt, Shmorhun and Fox) for addressing her needs so quickly. Mom also praised the nursing staff for helping her and her husband keep their sanity through it all.
