Hematology (Blood Disorders)
Each year, physicians all over Central Texas refer hundreds of their young patients to the Children’s Blood & Cancer Center for evaluation of possible blood disorders. Children with bleeding disorders can live full lives and enjoy most of the activities that other children do, but it’s important for them to learn how to stay as healthy as possible. Our goal is to help each child live well through treatment that will maximize their time at home and minimize their time at Dell Children’s.
Our hematology specialists provide innovative treatments and comprehensive care for children with acute and chronic blood disorders, including:
- Diagnosis and management of hereditary blood disorders, including hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, sickle cell disease, thalassemias, platelet disorders, and bone marrow failure (i.e. Fanconi anemia) including genetic counseling services.
- Diagnosis and management of acquired blood diseases, such as immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP), autoimmune anemias, aplastic anemia, and Evans syndrome
- Diagnosis and management of blood clots in children, including testing for inherited thrombophilias and management of blood-thinning medications
- Post- bone marrow transplant management and surveillance Our team follows advanced protocols and participates in clinical research projects to continually improve care. We ensure that children receive all the care they need to cope with chronic blood disorders through ongoing treatment and specialty clinics.
