Pediatric Residency Program
Message from our Director

imageOn behalf of all the faculty, residents, and staff in Austin, I am pleased to welcome you to the website of the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Austin - Pediatric Residency Program at the Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas. We are excited about your interest in our residency program, and I invite you to learn more about us.

Our program has been training pediatric residents and providing services to the children of Austin and Central Texas for almost 35 years. From its humble beginnings on a small pediatric ward in Austin's municipal hospital in 1973, the program has grown and evolved to the teaching service for the regional tertiary care center for Austin and Central Texas. The teaching staff includes pediatric hospitalists, ambulatory pediatricians, and an impressive array of pediatric subspecialists and pediatric subspecialty surgeons. They are dedicated to preparing pediatric residents to become strong general pediatricians or subspecialty fellows, according to individuals' interests. Our residents work directly with the faculty, including the subspecialists, to provide outstanding patient care to children. At the Dell Children's Medical Center, all major areas of pediatric subspecialty are represented. Residents are encouraged to pursue their passion in medicine - whether in general pediatrics or pediatric subspecialty.

The program's primary teaching facility is the Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas. This new state of the art, free-standing children's hospital opened its doors on June 30, 2007. In addition to the Medical Center, the Dell Campus includes a separate pediatric subspecialty clinic building, the new $100 million University of Texas Pediatric Research Institute (currently under construction), and the site of a planned pediatric outpatient clinic.

While not in the hospital, our residents enjoy everything the fabulous city of Austin has to offer. From its hike and bike trails and numerous lakes and parks to the live music scene and great restaurants, Austin is a fun, dynamic city that is perfect for the young professional or growing family. Many of our residents have chosen to stay in Austin to practice after completing residency. Others have returned after completing subspecialty training.

Choosing a residency is an important and exciting time. We encourage you to visit us and experience our program first-hand. Good luck and I look forward to meeting you.
