News Seton Associates Team up for Mock Surgery & More Saturday, Feb. 9

Home > About Us >

AUSTIN, Texas - (Jan. 18, 2013) - Once again, it's time to explore that age old mystery … what really happens behind the closed doors of an operating room?

Fortunately, you don't have to get hit by a bus and go under the knife to find out. And you can even bring your kids!

In fact, children are the main reason dozens of Seton associates team up and present " Mock Surgery & More," a free open house that last year drew about 2,000 visitors.

Mock Surgery is primarily designed to acquaint youngsters with what they might see if they ever are brought to an emergency room or hospitalized - and help them understand that doctors, nurses and other staff are dedicated to helping them.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Clinical Education Center (CEC) at Brackenridge, 1400 N. IH-35. The CEC occupies the old children's hospital sandwiched between University Medical Center Brackenridge and the freeway, on the southwest corner of 15th Steet and IH-35's southbound access road.

The CEC entrance is off the access road - it's the first right turn after crossing 15th Street. Free parking is available in the parking garage next to the CEC.

From 8 to 9 a.m., doors open early for school groups - and there are many, from science classes to scout troops. There also are many older children in attendance who may be thinking about pursuing medical studies in college.

Visitors can learn about what happens during surgical procedures and about many health care professionals and organizations that support surgical care.

During a self-guided tour, one can see simulated surgeries and operating room mock-ups and hands-on demonstrations of surgical equipment and health care procedures.

Besides representatives from local universities and surgical support organizations, doctors and nurses can talk to youngsters and answer their questions.

For more information, go to the Mock Surgery web page. Any questions, email mocksurgery@seton.net.
