News Pediatric Psychiatrist Dr. William Streusand Named To American College of Psychiatrists

AUSTIN, TX - (February 24, 2010) - Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas Chief of Psychiatry William C. Streusand, MD, has been named a member of the prestigious American College of Psychiatrists. The non-profit national honorary association of psychiatrists includes members who have been recognized for significant contributions to the profession.

Dr. Streusand is the fourth Austin-area psychiatrist and the first specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry to be named to the organization. He will be inducted at the next annual meeting on Feb. 25, 2010.

The American College of Psychiatrists is an organization limited to 750 practicing psychiatrists who have demonstrated outstanding competence in the field of psychiatry and who have achieved national recognition in one of the following fields: clinical practice, research, academic leadership and teaching. New members must be nominated by Fellows or other members who are personally familiar with their work and career.

Dr. Streusand is co-founder and medical director of the Texas Child Study Center, a collaboration between Dell Children's and the College of Education of The University of Texas at Austin.

"While it is so nice to be recognized by colleagues for my work, I am most proud of the innovative, unique programs we have developed at the Texas Child Study Center," Dr. Streusand said. "With the collaboration of Dr. Kevin Stark from UT, we intend to build TCSC into a world-class program to serve the needs of Central Texas' children and families."

TCSC provides evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral and developmental disabilities; develops disease-specific evaluative and interventional programs to address autism spectrum disorders, depression and other mental health issues; serves the needs of acute and chronic medically ill youth and their families; and advances the science of the etiology and treatment of emotional, behavioral and developmental disorders in youth.

A psychiatrist in private practice since 1985, Dr. Streusand has led the consultation/liaison psychiatry service at the former Children's Hospital of Austin and at Dell Children's since 2002. He also served on the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine and now with The University of Texas Medical Branch - Galveston, UT Southwestern Austin and UT Austin. He was unit director of several child and adolescent inpatient units and intensive outpatient programs in Houston and served as president of the medical staff of two psychiatric facilities.

A Houston native, Dr. Streusand completed his undergraduate training in biology at Washington University. He completed medical school, general psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine.
